Understanding The Basics

What Are Lip & Tongue Ties?

You know that little “string” you have beneath your tongue? That’s called the frenum, and you also have one beneath your upper lip. The frenum helps your tongue and lip function, but there can be too much tissue or be too tight. A tongue tie is when the frenum restricts the tongue’s mobility and limits the tongue’s functionality. A lip tie is when the frenum restricts the lip’s mobility and normal functionality. That “tiny string” can have profound effects in a breastfeeding infant, a toddler learning to speak/chew, and even in adults with neck tension and sleep disorders.

Treatment

Dr. Lauren takes special care in her clinic to do a full tongue and lip tie release (frenectomy) with her CO2 laser. This procedure is completed in order to give an infant, child, or adult full movement of the tongue and lip without restriction. In children and adults, Dr. Lauren will discuss completing treatment in conjunction with a myofunctional therapist to get the full benefit of the release. The myofunctional therapist will help with the rest positions and exercises to help retrain the tongue from previous bad habits. Overall, a frenectomy will likely improve the ability to eat, speak, and sleep!
